How Far Is Prescott From Phoenix, and How Long Is the Drive?

The short answer

If you're thinking about a move to the Prescott area, or splitting your time between here and the Valley, the drive to Phoenix is one of the first things you'll want to picture. Here's the straight answer: downtown Prescott to downtown Phoenix is about 99 miles by road, and Prescott Valley is about 91 miles. A routing estimate puts the trip at about two hours from Prescott and a little under that from Prescott Valley, using State Route 69 and Interstate 17. Your real drive time will vary with traffic, weather, and construction.

Let's walk through the routes, the airport drive, and what the distance means day to day if you live here.

Where these numbers come from

We pulled the distances and estimated drive times from an online routing service built on OpenStreetMap map data, checked on October 3, 2026. We measured from the Yavapai County Courthouse in downtown Prescott and the Prescott Valley Civic Center to Phoenix City Hall and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Your own starting point and destination will change the numbers a bit, so treat them as a guide, not a promise.

These are estimates with no traffic factored in. Real trips often take longer, especially at busy times in the Phoenix area.

The main route: SR 69 and I-17

Most people drive State Route 69 southeast from Prescott, through Prescott Valley, until it meets Interstate 17, then take I-17 south into Phoenix. This is the route the routing service chose as the fastest from both towns.

Here's why Prescott Valley comes out closer: it sits along SR 69, on the way toward I-17. So if you'll be driving to the Valley often, that's a few miles and a few minutes saved on every trip, and it adds up over a year. It's one practical point to weigh alongside everything else you want in a home. For a fuller comparison, see Prescott vs. Prescott Valley.

The other way: through Wickenburg

There's a second route. You can take US 89 south from Prescott through Wickenburg, then US 60, also called Grand Avenue, into Phoenix. The routing service measured it at about 113 miles from downtown Prescott to downtown Phoenix, and its estimate was longer than the I-17 route.

Some drivers like it for a change of scenery, or for reaching the west side of the Phoenix area. It's worth knowing about, and worth checking against the main route before you leave.

Why your drive time can change

The mileage stays the same. The clock doesn't. A few things can stretch the trip:

  • Phoenix traffic. The last stretch into the city can slow down a lot at rush hour.
  • Busy travel days. Weekends and holidays can bring heavier traffic on the interstate.
  • Weather. Storms and winter weather can slow things down.
  • Construction and closures. Road work and planned closures happen throughout the year.

Before you head out, it helps to check current conditions. The Arizona Department of Transportation shares real-time highway conditions at az511.gov and by calling 511.

What it means if you live here

For a lot of people, about two hours is the sweet spot. Phoenix is close enough for a flight, a concert, a medical appointment, or a visit with family, and far enough that you come home to a slower pace.

If you'll be making the trip often, it helps to think about it while you're choosing a home. Where you live in the Quad Cities changes the drive. Chino Valley sits north of Prescott, for example, so plan on more time from there. Dewey-Humboldt and Prescott Valley sit on the eastern side of the area. We're happy to talk through the trade-offs with you, so the home fits the way you'll actually live.

Planning your move, and your timeline

If you're relocating, the drive also shapes how you plan. Many people visit a few times before they buy, and a two-hour trip makes it easy to see the area in different seasons and at different times of day.

When you're ready, we'll help you build a timeline for the whole move: when to visit, when to start looking seriously, and when to line up the sale of your current home if you have one. Seeing it laid out week by week takes a lot of the stress out of it. For more, read moving to Prescott: what to know before you relocate.
