Where Are the Best Hikes Near Prescott and Prescott Valley?

The short answer

The Prescott area is one of Arizona's best hiking regions, with well-loved trails for every level right outside town. The favorites: Thumb Butte, a roughly 2.2-mile loop with panoramic views of Prescott; the Watson Lake Loop through the surreal Granite Dells (about 5.2 miles); the flat, family-friendly Peavine Trail, a former rail line running roughly 12 miles along Watson Lake; and Granite Mountain, about a 6-mile loop with some of the best views in the region.

Easy and scenic

If you want beauty without a hard climb, start with the Peavine Trail. It follows an old railroad grade, so it stays mostly flat and gravel, winding past dramatic granite formations and along the shore of Watson Lake — and it's shared happily by walkers, bikers, and horseback riders. The Watson Lake Loop adds a bit more distance but rewards you with the Granite Dells: massive boulders rising straight out of the water. Both are ideal for an easy morning outdoors.

A little more of a climb

Ready to work for the view? Thumb Butte is the classic Prescott hike — a compact loop up to big panoramic views (there's a small parking fee at the trailhead). For a longer effort, Granite Mountain starts gently and then climbs up into the rocks, and many locals will tell you it has the best views of any hike around.

Why this matters if you're thinking about the area

For a lot of the people we work with at Home Team Prescott — folks moving into their next chapter, downsizing, or relocating for the lifestyle — being able to walk out the door into country like this is the whole point. The trails are part of daily life here, not a once-a-year trip. When you're ready to picture it, explore Prescott or Prescott Valley.
